Many of the writers we hear or read about or read their work dropped out of school. Some of them opted to teach themselves. Here are the authors who dropped out of school:
Harper Lee
She is the perfect example of following your dreams. Her dreams came true, and she bagged the Pulitzer Prize. As soon as she joined high school, Lee had an infatuation with literature. In college, she went and pursued a law career, she likely needed law homework help in that times. She got accepted at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. After one semester, she dropped out and relocated to New York City to chase her writing dream. The rest is history.
Augusten Burroughs
He had first attempted to drop out of school at a mere age of 13 when his mother assisted him in faking a suicide attempt to finish it off. At the age of 17, he had his GED, which he got after successfully changing his name. he enrolled in Holyoke Community College and shortly dropped out. He moved on to NYC and secured a job at an advertising agency and came up with the first bestseller at the age of 37.
Charles Dickens
In his junior years, he lavished a private education, and by the age of 12, his dad got arrested and sent to prison over debts, and things crumbled. He got forced to drop out of school and got a job in a warehouse, earning six shillings a day for a 10-hour work. His father managed to get out of jail eventually, but he expresses the neglect he felt in most of his duties.
Jack Kerouac
While in high school, he was not a poet. He loved football and won a scholarship and enrolled at Columbia University. He did not get along with the coach. They had constant arguments, and he sat on the bench most of the time. He dropped out of school shortly after cracking his tibia.
William Faulkner
He started writing as a teenager but only wrote poems. At the tender age of 15, he dropped out of school to work in his grandfather’s bank. Without a diploma, William enrolled as a student at the age of 22 at Ole Miss. After three semesters, he waved bye to the institution.
Mark Twain
At a tender age of 12, he dropped out of school. His father’s death was the main contributor to his actions, and all the children had to chip in. he took a job as a printer with board and clothes as his only compensation. After some years, the brother bought a small printer, and that is when the writing journey got sparked.
Harvey Pekar
He graduated from high school in 1957 and later enrolled at Case Western University. He dropped out barely a year later in the institution when the pressure of attending math classes dawned on him. He joined the Navy and got discharged and resorted to living the rest of his life back in Cleveland.
George Bernard Shaw
At a younger age, he attended many schools before finally dropping out at the age of 14. He found very little help with formal education then went on to say that schools are nowadays not centers for education but are prisons in which young people are kept away from their parents in avoidance of getting disrupted.
